WP1 – Genetic and health certification

Activities Carried Out

Genetic and health certification of propagated varieties and oil is a key initiative to ensure the authenticity and quality of Italian agricultural production. In a global context where consumers are increasingly attentive to the provenance and quality of food, certification offers a systematic way to identify and protect plant varieties and oils of origin, helping to protect the national agri-food heritage. This process involves the use of modern technologies, such as molecular markers and coding systems(barcodes), which make it possible to trace and verify the identity of cultivars and clones, as well as monitor plant healthconditions.

Results

2020-2024

  • Development of molecular markers.
  • Genome sequencing of the domestic olive tree.
  • Sequencing of the chloroplast genome of three cultivars.
  • The tools used for analysis and sampling allow the research to be extended to the chloroplast and mitochondrial genome of the olive species by developing a new set of markers to strengthen the identity certification of cultivars of interest.
